A PRISMA review of expectancy-value theory in music contexts

In this article, we systematically reviewed the research literature dealing with expectancy-value motivation theory within music contexts. Employing PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) approach, a total of 1,120 records were retrieved examined, 110 eventually included in analyses. Frequencies/percentages generated output 5-year time periods, type publication, sampling locations, methodologies. Summaries all provided; content analyses on topics covered also conducted. Findings indicated clear increase interest over past 15 years quantitative methodologies being twice as prevalent qualitative approaches. While vast majority (97.7%) employed self-report questionnaires, most common form data collection was interviews (59.1%). Salient students’ beliefs across other school subjects, continued participation, intentions to pursue career music, parental influences.
